Message from Principal Emel: Beloved Ms. Douglas

*SPECIAL NOTE: For those who would like to attend Ms. Douglas' homegoing celebration provided by her family on Thursday August 31st, please email the PTO for further details: psis187@gmail.com

Dear PS/IS 187 Families, It is with great sadness that I inform you of the death of one of our staff members, Ms. Amber Douglas. Ms. Douglas, our beloved teacher who taught middle school students, died on July 29, 2023. This is a tragedy for Ms. Douglas’ family, our students, and our entire school community. Deepest sympathy and condolences go out to the family and our entire school community.

We know how devastating this news is for our school community. As we return to school next week, I anticipate that the coming days and weeks will be particularly difficult for everyone. We have professionals trained to help with the needs of students, parents, and school personnel during difficult times. Our School Crisis Team and school counselors will be available to provide counseling for any student or staff member who may need or want help surrounding this loss. Team members will check-in with students and staff to provide support and resources.

Our staff will work closely with our students to provide information and help to express the pain and sadness they might be experiencing when we return to school. It is equally important that you as their parent also provide your child with understanding and support during this difficult time.

Please feel free to reach out to me, our School Counselor (Ms. Chen, 212-927-8218) or to another staff member if you have any questions or concerns. Also, we encourage you to utilize the DOE Crisis Page for additional resources. Thank you for your understanding and support during this difficult time.

Sincerely,

Emel Topbas-Mejia

Principal
