Diversity Equity & Inclusion

PS/IS 187 PTO is committed to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) as a collective undertaking that requires frequent assessment and consistent action. We owe it to each other - as a unified school community - to acknowledge, learn and understand how subtle, institutional, and overt racist actions, words, and behaviors perpetuate negative stereotypes
that impact the lives of those in our school, neighboring community and beyond.

Therefore, the following principles guide our actions:

  • We owe it to our children to address and redress racism in our society.

  • We owe it to our children to acknowledge that racism exists not only in our country but also in our school community.

  • We owe it to our children to speak honestly about racial bias and to show them that racial bias will not be condoned under any circumstances in our community.

  • We owe it to our children to provide Culturally Responsive Teaching & Learning.

  • We owe it to our children to model positive behavior that values and honors Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion for all.

The PTO executive board recently submitted, to the School Leadership Team (SLT), a proposal for curriculum development around diversity, equity, and inclusion school-wide, from Pre-K to 8th grade. We are happy to share that SLT accepted the proposal and is including DEI as one of the goals of the comprehensive education plan (CEP) As with all things of great importance, development, planning, time, and patience are needed to create grade-appropriate lessons designed to educate, nurture, and graduate informed critical thinkers.

We believe this is the first step to continuous, open, and honest DEI dialog and we invite you to share in the conversations.
